    Burckhardt Compression AG, based in Winterthur (Switzerland), is one of the world‘s largest manufacturers of piston compressors. It already has an Alpha 1250 M, a Heavyspeed 2 ram type boring mill and a Dörries CONTUMAT VC 2400 MC-V vertical turning lathe, which are used to manufacture cylinders, cylinder blocks, frames, valve heads and steering rods for compressors from castings and forgings with a high degree of automation. Absolute precision in the micrometre range (20 μm) is needed here, because all of the parts must fit each other exactly during later assembly. The new Scharmann ECOFORCE 2 HT4, which serves as a replacement for an old Wotan machine tool, closes the machining gap between the Alpha and the Heavyspeed. Number four is again a stand-alone machine individualised according to customer request with a very powerful 54-kW spindle (torque: 3,000 Nm in S1 continuous operation) for medium-sized parts of up to 24 tonnes (X: 3,500 mm, Y: 2,500 mm, Z: 3,500 mm, W: 800 mm). The combination of head attachments and flexible tool magazine with automatic changes enables the use of large two-blade tools. An RTM 220 Kuka robot tool magazine (for 196 tools) and an automatic pickup magazine for head attachments reduce downtimes. In addition, a facing head (diameter: 500 mm), attachment spindle (length: 1,000 mm, diameter: 180 mm) and a spindle-driven angled milling head are used. An adapter plate enables the use of existing machining heads on both the Heavyspeed and the Scharmann ECOFORCE.

    From a modular design concept Dörries CONTUMAT vertical turning lathes can be configured to meet both standard applications as well as the most specific and demanding client requirements. Each modular element of the machine structure features compact finite element method (FEM) designed machine components of cast iron construction. All modules feature the same common design principles of excellent vibrationdamping as well as high rigidity, resistance to bending and torsional strength, thermo-stability and low expansion coefficients. Dörries guarantees the utmost precision, highly satisfactory metal removal rates as well as good surface quality and durability. All Dörries CONTUMAT turning lathes can be configured to drill, mill and grind if required. All lathes can be used as standalone machines, supplemented with pallet systems, or linked together with other machines. Appropriate additional equipment can be included for the measurement of workpieces or tools.

    Orizon Aerostructures is building something truly unique in American manufacturing with a multi-million dollar investment in six additional ECOSPEED F2060 high-speed machining centers and an automated 12 pallet shuttle system from the Starrag Group of Switzerland. The six ECOSPEED F2060 and two-place rail guided pallet shuttle system will be used to produce a range of aluminum structural components at unrivalled levels of effectiveness and efficiency. With the high-speed-spindle of the ECOSPEED is a cutting volume of up to 10,000 cm3/min reachable. True the kinematics are the 5-axis-machining clearly faster than similar machines with fork heads. Starrag engineers will work in close partnership with Orizon’s team to ensure each machine and every machining operation is fully engineered, commissioned and approved – and that the system will continue to consistently perform to the exacting requirements laid down by the American company. The partnership agreement between the two companies has effectively seen them work closely together ‘from machine foundations up’, developing turnkey engineered packages based around time studies, tool selection and part acceptance for a number of workpieces. “We are very excited to partner with Starrag on this major investment.” said Chief Executive Officer Charlie Newell “We are building something unique in Grove, OK unlike any other manufacturing company in the United States.     Year on year, Starrag’s Turbine Technology Days never fail to impress – and the 2018 edition, the sixth in the annual series, was no exception as it showcased developments to further improve the efficiency of machining turbine blades, aerospace blisks and jet engine casings, including: - A flexible manufacturing system featuring 11 Starrag NB 151 machines, for automated blisk manufacture; - A toolchanging angle head – a joint development with Benz – where a single head with HSK-B63 interface can replace the use of multiple angle heads; and - Adaptive roughing of turbine blades, to eliminate ‘air cuts’, by using in-machine probing in conjunction with Starrag’s RCS programming routines. Also previewed was Starrag’s new larger capacity NB 151 blisk machine – for components up to 600 mm diameter – as well as the ultra high-accuracy Bumotec s191 mill-turn centre that was demonstrated machining aero-engine fuel injectors. #aerospace #milling #cnc #machinetool #machining
